Preliminary Task

This is where we will research the school magazine.  I will consider what will be different about a school magazine in comparison to a music, lifestyle or other genre of magazine.  Also, I will consider what different steps I need to go through to create a school specific magazine that appeals to a target audience.  .

This Prezi is an analysis of school magazine covers, I analysed four front covers.

Target audience is a very important key concept.  My audience theory is on my research and planning page; it is important to understand the concept of audience as I will need to have a clear understanding of what motivates a person to buy a magazine. This will allow me to manipulate and appeal to those motivations in order for me to entice audiences to read my media product.  For example, I could use personal pronouns and rhetorical questions.

This is an analysis of the results I collected using Survey Monkey, I have analysed it in slide-share and also analysed what I will put in the magazine as a result of these findings.

This is my analysis of the pictures that I may use in the final cover of my magazine. It gives reasons as to why I may choose to use them in my final cover.

This is my final cover for my school magazine, this is not the mock up. This is what my final cover will look like.

This is my final contents page for my school magazine, this is not the mock up. This is what my final contents page will look like.

I think I have done well on the actual cover and contents page of my magazine, I have improved well from my initial design, as my last one was not professional looking. I took into account what the people on Survey Monkey had said.  For example, results suggested that a preferred colour was red. Preferred content concerned sports, grades and featured students on the front, I also know that people enjoy computer science the most, so I put a story about this on the contents page to attract the most people possible.

I understand that this was somewhat unacceptable as there were no images on this contents, and I made a typo on "Sixth Form" I made a typo and then I did not notice, my friend pointed it out,and my teacher pointed it out on my blog, thus I had to change it. I will also add images to make it more appealing. This was pointed out on my page and in real life. This is the new design I came up with, with some small changes.

As you can see, I have made changes to make it more appealing and engaging to the audience that is relevant to the contents page, such as sports pictures to relate to the sports article. I also removed the white background on the Archbishop Ilsley logo, as it looked unprofessional, and it now blends in with the rest of the background. I chose the titles as it was indicated to me that people want news about grades on sports, and their favourite subject was computing, That was my idea for these titles.

Linking to audience theory, I used things such as "Good or Bad" this gives the reader a sense of belongingness, that they can become involved in the magazine and make their own personal decisions and decide for them self, having some involvement and thinking they can make a change. I also used exclamation marks in almost every sentence, to give the audience a feeling of diversion, that they can escape into this exciting world of the magazine, that is what I have included thanks to my understanding of audience theory.

This is the linguistic analysis of my first mock up cover. This is also the flat plan of what my school magazine will look like, this was just plan so it does not finally look like this as I did improvements as this was just a plan, I made it look much better.

This is the flat plan of my contents page, just like the drawing above is the flat plan of my cover. These were edited grealy to improve them, and changed greatly to make them more appealing to viewers, but this was my original flat plan that I had in mind.

I made yet another typo on the word "Sixth" that my friend has pointed out to me, I have now changed this due to this peer assessment, and have changed and improved it, with no typos on "Sixth Form". This is because I made the flat plan, and the actual one before the comment, So I would have had to edit them both to make it correct, as they were made at similar times before I realised my mistake.

  3. Clear progression through the task. Good use of mock ups to draft final designs. Your use of mock ups clearly influenced your final design making it look more professional. Try adding pictures in your final contents page to appeal to the reader.
